Competence Management

There are many external definitions of competence with the statement below, used by the UK Health and Safety Executive, being typical:

Competence is the ability to undertake responsibilities and perform activities to a recognised standard on a regular basis. It combines practical and thinking skills, knowledge and experience.

To improve the competence of your workforce in a systemic way there are some key steps to take.

  • Identifying and recognising appropriate skills and proficiency
  • Risk-based training needs analysis (RBTNA)
  • Establishing competency matrices and other frameworks
  • Developing training solutions
  • Curriculum design
  • Setting assessment methodology and tools
  • Integrating competence management with business goals and performance analysis
