Competence Management
There are many external definitions of competence with the statement below, used by the UK Health and Safety Executive, being typical:
Competence is the ability to undertake responsibilities and perform activities to a recognised standard on a regular basis. It combines practical and thinking skills, knowledge and experience.
To improve the competence of your workforce in a systemic way there are some key steps to take.
- Identifying and recognising appropriate skills and proficiency
- Risk-based training needs analysis (RBTNA)
- Establishing competency matrices and other frameworks
- Developing training solutions
- Curriculum design
- Setting assessment methodology and tools
